Aiming for Lake Clifton finish

Hello to you all

The “boys” are out running after a very wet windy day yesterday.  They finished the day 80kms south of Mandurah (near Australind where we parked for the night) feeling tired and looking forward to a hot shower.

It is now 7.22am and there is not a cloud in the sky.  Although the sun is trying to come out it is still very cool.  In fact there was ice on the car windscreen and the temperature needle is 1c.

Both David and Brian are feeling some discomfort in their feet and legs but say they are feeling well.  We were worried that Brian’s achilles may be a problem as it started niggling him late yesterday.  It appears to have settled with rest overnight.

Brian is  adjusting to the slower, low gait of David.

Right now I am parked up at the Myalup Roadhouse waiting for the boys to join me.  It is so busy here with truckies pulling up for breakfast.

Margaret is back at Australind and will join us later.  She will then drive to her daughter’s holiday house at Falcon and park up for the day to rest her leg.  We will join her later in the day.

Off and Racing …

At 7.15am Monday 28th David and fellow Masters Athletics runner, Brian Bennett were given a tremendous sendoff by Masters Athletics runners and walkers who had camped the long weekend at Lewana Cottages.

Keen to see that David and Brian got off to a good start the 20+ runners ran and biked with David and Brian for five to  ten kilometres with some (Dr John Bell and Jennifer), going the 16kms to Balingup where they stopped for a well earned break.

The highlight of the start was 80+ year old Merv Moyle taking the barrow and walking it down  onto the road.  Unfortunately due to a misunderstanding, the Ballingup support group who gathered in Balingup to cheer David and Brian, missed then by only 15 minutes.  We sincerely thank them for their efforts.

David and Brian pulled up at 3pm 5ms north of Donnybrook after having completed 53kms.  Like David on his run across Australia, Brian felt some discomfort at the base of his feet (particularly the ball of his foot)

Tuesday 29.9.9

Despite threatening rain and cold, David and Brian have been running well taking turns sharing the barrow and have past through Boyanup Brook covering 10kms in 1hr 20 minutes.  They didn’t stop for a break for fear of seizing up in the cold as it is only 6c here.  They are planning to finish the day at Australind.

For those who knew Margaret had a fall over the weekend, she is feeling fine but has decided to have a Dr check her injured knee and change the bandages in Donnybrook.  She is still there now so I will update you when she comes back.

1.00pm

Margaret has seen the Doctor and her knee has been cleaned and bandaged.  She may have to take antibiotics but is going to wait another day before doing so.

David and Brian have endured another heavy shower and are now near Eaton on the Bypass road.  They have done 35kms and will be doing another 15kms before the end of the day finishing around 3.30pm.  We have had a change of plans and they are now going to keep to Old Coast Road until Mandurah when they will then use to cycleway alongside of the new highway.

Closer and closer ….to Perth

Hello from sunny Geraldton.  Here we are 424kms north of Perth slowly making our way back to Perth.

We have just spent three wonderful days in Kalbarri with a workmate of mine, Sue Thomas and her husband Paul.  Sue and Paul left Perth four years ago to buy the Kalbarri Cafe.  Although biased, we think their fish and chips are the WORLD’S BEST and recommend you call in and test their delicious fish and chips.

Today we took a trip down memory lane visiting Mullewa (99kms east of Geraldton) for the first time since leaving in 1976.  I lived there with my young family of three sons and husband Clive for 2.5 years while working on the railways.

I have some great photos of Mullewa and Geraldton but am having trouble uploading the pictures. So for now it will be just text until I can solve the problem.

Wheelbarrow Man is pumped for action for his return run into Perth

Look out Danny Green, Wheelbarrow Man has been pumping up at Carnarvon’s PCYC boxing ring for his return 250 km run into Perth Saturday 3rd October.

Seriously, when things were quiet at the Carnarvon PCYC gym David and I had a bit of fun with the camera and here are the results.  If you look closer you will see David has had a haircut.  So what’s new about that you may ask.   While sightseeing out the Blowholes (70kms north of Carnavon) we decided to detour to see the forty plus fishing shanties and in doing so saw a sign (see below) for haircuts from a very mobile hairdresser called Pat from Yanchep.

Pat told us she drives with her caravan to Quobba each June and stays until late September. The 1,070 km drive is no mean feat as she parks just off the beach with no services so she has to bring with her water and gas supplies.  Pat does this on her own.

Pictures of Exmouth

It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly twelve months since we left on the Wheelbarrow Across Australia Run.  We have submitted the run documentation to Guinness Records (some time ago) and have had feedback from Guinness Records but hope to hear some good news from them soon.

We are arriving back in Perth on Saturday 3rd October. David is going to run from Lewana (near Ballingup) where fellow Masters runners will be gathered for the long weekend.  David will be averaging 50kms for five days and will finish at The Raffles Hotel at Canning Bridge on Saturday 3rd (very apt location after a big run).  So if you are free to come and cheer him in just let me know (jo@aussiedust.com) or 0411747022.  I will update you on his arrival time as it gets closer

We are now in Coral Bay after spending six days at Exmouth.  The weather in Exmouth was lovely but we encountered some windy days and nights which brought back (nightmares) memories of the Nullarbor.

Our first sight coming into Exmouth was of a huge 1500 passenger liner called the  Sea Princess.  From 10kms out it looked like the liner was surreally suspended in the landscape. As we neared we could see it parked out in the bay.  Passengers we were told, were ferried to the shore for tours of  the town and Cape Range National Park.  The liner ended up staying in Exmouth for 24 hours and over a year six liners call in.

Not having been to Exmouth for over 10 years we were pleasantly surprised to see a new marina and plush new Hotel (Novatel Hotel).  The global slow down had obviously slowed property development of the marina but it looks like the mining boom north will soon kick start the area.
