Running a wheelbarrow across Australia

After 21 years working in the mines and the gem fields, 65 year old David Baird is seeking a challenge of a different kind.

David is racing against time as he attempts to set a new world record running with the “tool of his trade” a wheelbarrow across Australia. David has taken the time to include those affected by breast and prostate cancer to make this run particularly significant to many Australian families.

The Breast Cancer Foundation of WA (BCFWA) has presented David with a number of small mementoes representing people that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. These mementoes will be secured in David’s wheelbarrow so that they can travel across the Nullabor with him, sharing their spirit in each of the towns he travels through.

A number of mementoes are being sourced from 14 towns on the journey.

Although awareness is a key focus to this attempt, David is also eager to raise much needed funds to assist the BCFWA and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to provide personalised support and care for those affected by cancer.

All money raised from this event will assist the BCFWA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to continue providing personalised support and care for those affected by cancer. This includes providing essential services such as financial assistance and emotional support for those going through treatment.

The Wheelbarrow across Australia World Record Attempt starts on Sunday 21st September 2008 at Cottesloe Beach and is to finish five months later at Manly Beach in Sydney. The overall run will total a massive 4115 kilometres, visit 72 towns and take up to 150 days (5 months) to complete.

If you would like to support this worthwhile cause and donate to the BCFWA or the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia you can do so by clicking on the BCFWA or PCFA logo above, which will take you direct to a donation page. All donations over two dollars are tax deductible.
